| I don't THINK I've shown this pic yet? This year has been so chaotic, sorry if I have... | |

| “I am Karl and this is Erik, my apprentice.” “I’m not your apprentice; you’re my apprentice.” “What?” “Well an apprentice isn’t very edgy is it? And I’m as edgy as an octagon and you…well…” “What?” “Well, you’re about as edgy as a Jacobean ruff.” “I thought you said they were in?” “Yeah, well they’re out right now.” “Sure, whatever,” Karl fumed. He was wearing a Jacobean ruff with a turtleneck. “Sorry mate,” Erik tilted his feathery hat to the side. “You know it takes twenty peacocks to make one of those hats.” “Bull shit…really?” Karl adjusted his Jacobean ruff, “Nah.” | |

| Any idea how much the GRE might matter when applying for an MSW program at the same school you from which you recently received an MA (in a different field?)
Thing is, I didn't have to take the GRE for my MA in Sociology. The program had just stopped requiring it for admission. Plus, I was an undergrad there, did very well, was familiar with the department, etc. I had no trouble getting in, was given an assistantship, and honestly had a great experience. I'd actually do it again. I have found the job market pretty dismal over the past year and, though I loved my program, think something more applied like an MSW probably would have been a better route in terms of career preparation. I'd really love to become a therapist (which I did know before beginning the MA in Sociology, but I really loved the discipline, so whatever...) and think an MSW would be the easiest way to get there.
I'm just worried about my potential GRE score and wondering how much I should work on it. It's not a terribly competitive school or anything, but I don't anticipate doing brilliantly as I have some diagnosed learning disabilities that make standardized testing difficult. Do you guys think my having a very successful graduate experience in another department at the same school might help overcome a fairly low or medicore GRE score? I mean, since the GRE is supposed to predict success and graduate school and I've already proven that I can do pretty well at it. I have a 3.9 GPA (stupid stats!), excellent assistantship/research/volunteer experience, and can get glowing letters. I just can't stop obsessing over the GRE part of the package! I tried studying before when I was planning on applying to PhD programs and it was really tough. My partner was recently laid off and I'm now working horrible shifts at Target for minimum wage, so I'm going to have to figure how to balance all that mess and deal with GRE preparation. Ugh. :/
Anyway, I know you guys don't work for the program or anything. Just thought you might have some kind of feedback that could prove helpful! :)

| I'm a little bit curious about this-Is Phi Beta Kappa a big deal, and if I was invited, should I join? I wasn't invited as an undergrad, but I just finished my first semester as a master's student and got an invitation. I'm just wondering if it is worth 75 dollars, and if it will make a difference when I apply to PhD programs and apply for jobs in academia. | |

| so as grad school has gone on, i've noticed myself more and more dreading the awkward conversations where i'm asked what i "do for a living." i usually just reply that i'm in grad school, but that obviously leads to questions about what i'm studying, what i want to be when i grow up, etc.
at first i didn't mind answering the questions, but i've grown to hate it. i always feel like such a douchebag saying i'm working on a PhD. i mean, perhaps it's just that most people don't seem to understand what getting a PhD entails. lately, i've been dealing with a lot of questions about if i'm glad finals are over or when the semester starts up again, and then i have to explain how we don't take classes past the first year, which leads to even more confusion from the person, ugh.
another thing i hate is when i tell people i'm studying chemistry, i always receive responses like "oh i was really bad at chemistry in high school." there aren't really many ways you can respond to that other than like "oh, that sucks." blah, i should just lie and say i work at target or something.
i don't know, do you guys find these questions awkward too? how do you all deal with them? i feel like i have these conversations with everyone ranging from my family to my hair stylist, ugh.

| i recently discovered that i'm rapidly running out of block space on my wii console. moreover, i learned that you can't really run games (wiiware and virtual console games) off of the SD card (if you do, you need to have the space available on the console to run it despite it not being stored there) and that if you have save data, that needs to be on the console in order to be accessible as well (i think, i don't remember exactly). this, of course, was kind of off-putting. so, i've got some questions on blocks (of memory): - what are people doing to make it easier to manage the blocks of memory on their wii and SD cards? - in particular how are people using SD cards? - i heard that you can delete wiiware and virtual console games and that you can download them again whenever. is this true? - do the newer wii consoles come with more space? i really love supporting the whole wiiware effort. i've got quite a number of downloaded titles. it'd be a shame if i can't do that anymore. if anyone can shed light on this situation, i'd appreciate it. OH AND ALSO: someone should look into replacing the background image for the header of the community's journal view. it's a dead photobucket link. | |

| Ok, so the wife and I picked up a new Wii system for the family for Christmas.
Its something I've wanted to do for a while, I've poked at the wii a few times at friends houses, but never really sat down with one and PLAYED before.
We've got the 2 controllers/nunchucks, we've got it hooked to the internet.
We've poked at Wii Sports, Wii Spore Hero (My son >loves< it), Wii Arcade? (not thrilled), Madagascar Racing game (Good fun) and.. Wii Deca Sports (Havent tried it yet).
What we're wondering is.. Where do we go from here?
What are the "Must Have" games for Kids? For adults? We have our two kids who are 3 & 6 yrs old, but also have neighbor kids over ranging in age from 6-12. Any recomendations for them?
Are there any particular accessories we should look at picking up?
Problems found so far:
In the Madagascar racing game, it seems like the turning is very.. soft. it takes a long time sometimes for it to respond to a left or right turn.
When using the remote on the menu screens, we seem to have a lot of Shake in the pointer. I've tried changing the sensitivity, and it doesn't seem to help. Right now we're about 5-8 away from the TV depending on if we're sitting or standing while playing. the Sensor Bar is on top of the TV which is about 5' off the ground. Should we have it lower? Below the screen instead?
